Parade Day 2016 is Here!

st-patricks-day-parade-graphic-for-share-on-myspace

Parade Day is upon us Stamford and that means it’s time to get your green on, grab your friends and hit ALL of Downtown like you never have before!

I’m a HUGE fan of Parade Day—I call it my ‘second Christmas’. Besides the Guinness, green beer and Jameson flowing, it’s become a reunion day of sorts. Every year, I see folks I either only get to see once a year on this day or stay in one place long enough and you will see friends that you haven’t seen in years! Also, since the actual St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Thursday this year, (and I won’t be writing emails to your bosses to get out of work the Friday after), it’s time to embrace the wonder that IS….Parade Day!!

I’m posting some Parade Day happenings for you here –by no means will this be a complete list. Let’s face it EVERYWHERE you go, there will be a lot going on! But I wanted to give you a sampling to get you in the St. Pats spirit!! Also, I’m posting the official website for the Parade with the route map and more of the official information as well.

Let’s get our Irish on:

~

Official St. Patrick’s Day Parade Site: Parade route, times and more…   http://www.stamfordstpatricksdayparade.com/ If you are having trouble with the site, check their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/Stamford-St-Patricks-Day-Parade-123527887818324/?fref=ts

~

Casey’s Tavern:  Starting at 11am:  $5 Bud Light bottles, bagpipers and Irish dancers throughout the day!! Special menu on hand as well and be sure to stay for LIVE music Saturdays beginning at 10pm w/the David Henry Project!!

~

Murphy’s Townhouse: Opening at 9am on Parade Day, Murphy’s has a special Irish menu that runs from now thru St. Patrick’s Day. Going to be a great day for a beer or two on the patio!

~

Tiernans:  DJs, Irish Dancers, Bagpipers, specials all day and then Fast Ricky takes the stage LIVE at 10pm!

~

McFadden’s: $4 Green Beer from 11:30am-1pm as well as a $10 Breakfast Buffet!

~

Tigin: Annual Parade Day party is BACK!! Doors open at 7:30am for the Spurs v Arsenal game and 6 Nations rugby after. HEATED tent opens up at 12pm with LIVE music. $10 cover begins at noon. Starting at 4pm, only 21 and older allowed in. Then starting at 7pm, the tradition continues with The Last Hoorah playing LIVE in the tent!! For all the info: http://www.tiginirishpub.com/stamford/st-patricks-day/

~

Brick House: The Brick-turns-Irish tradition continues this year with LIVE Irish music w/Seamus throughout the day, Tippy Cow shots, $8 Miller Lite YARDS and the annual Jameson toast at 5pm! All this and Irish wonder Frankie behind the bar?! Absolutely!!   (Annual Jameson toast in Memory of Mike Chapman.)

~

Fiddlers Green: While Fiddlers may not be downtown, this Irish bar will be ready for you with Irish Dancers, Bagpipes, Drums and bands as well as a wonderful Irish menu going all day long!

~

Just a few tips for this day—it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Remember to drink some water or soda here and there and get some food in you too! At the end of your celebrating…call a cab, Uber it, or hell, even walk it if you have to…let’s all get home safely!!!

Oh one more thing…it’s a LONG day for those working behind the bars, at the doors and those in uniform keeping us safe. They are the heroes of the day–be nice! (And forget the ‘fancy drinks’–when it’s 5 deep at the bar, the last thing you should order are fancy drinks!)

~

So there you go guys! Have fun, be SAFE and as always…Keep it Local Stamford!!! #wotm #keepitlocal #wotmnation #everyonesirish #getyourgreenon #irishproud #paradeday2016 #stamfordct #ripmrc #greenbeer #cornedbeef #guinnessflowing #LIVEmusic #jameson

The Taste of Stamford Really Keeps it Local!

194ab

What’s on the Menu? for the last five years has meant one thing…Keeping it Local. And the annual Taste of Stamford event does just that! Held at the Stamford Marriott and created by the Stamford Chamber of Commerce, this annual glut-a-thon showcases some of the city’s local eateries, caterers and beverage distributors.

This has become quite a hot ticket and happy to say that this past one was the 23rd time this event has taken place. It’s a wonderful opportunity to try so many different restaurants at one time and believe me, no matter what your tastes are or if you are like me and have food issues, you won’t leave here hungry.

When I first walked in,  I was excited to see that we were given menus of what the individual food booths would be serving. I’ve been to quite a few of these types of gatherings and many times the lines at the tables are because you don’t know what kind of food you’ll be served. So bonus points in my book for this little touch!

There was great music playing thanks to the DJ from James Daniel Entertainment and it was time to grab an empty glass off of one of the tables and visit what I dubbed, the ‘beverage area’. Beer, wine and more were available to us and I was able to try a few different drinks before the evening was over. (Special shout-out to Al from Sam Adams who let me go back a few times for their Cold Snap ale.)

139

Glasses upon glasses waiting for us.

Despite the WOTM name, I’m not a food critic. However, I do know what I like and here’s what I had: Pulled pork from Brother Jimmy’s BBQ—piled high on the plate to which I added a little of their chipotle BBQ sauce to try—juicy, full of flavor, easily could have kept eating this.

I had a braised short rib taco from Cantina Tequilla Bar & Southwest Grill. The perfect size, it was packed with meat and personally felt it didn’t need the usual squeeze of lime or salsa, didn’t want to take away from the taste of it. On to Capital Grille to get a sample of the dish I get every time I go there—the Kona—a coffee encrusted, perfectly cooked piece of steak that you barely have to chew because it’s so tender and juicy.

Something new that I got to try and have been raving to anyone who will listen since was from Olio Restaurant on Hope St. It was the Gochujiang Pork Belly over Brussel Sprout Kimchi. I’m not a Kimchi person, never have been. But I can’t turn down Brussel sprouts—and who can pass by pork belly?! This small dish of food honestly made me stop where I was. There was so much going on between the pork and the Kimchi and it all worked so, so well.

141

Gochujiang Pork Belly over Brussel Sprout Kimchi from Olio.

I wish I was able to try more of the bigger dishes that were served as it all looked wonderful. As I have food allergies I have to be careful, so I brought a friend with me who got to try them and needless to say, they were hits! There were incredible presentations of sushi from Kona Grill, a mountain of fresh oysters waiting to become handcrafted oyster shooters from Sign of the Whale, big wheels of cheese with beautifully created dishes from Columbus Park Trattoria  and the Stamford Marriott itself. There were many more places represented and I will provide the list below—I don’t want to forget anyone!

Restaurants were not the only Stamford representatives at this gathering promoting their menus. This was a great place to introduce new ideas from old favorites as well as a couple of new comers!

DiMare Pastry was on hand with a table full of cannoli creations that even just looking at them I put on 20lbs! I saw cannoli cupcakes, shooters, puff pastry and more. They of course had traditional cannoli and their super-famous cannoli donuts and nachos in both regular and chocolate varieties. So what’s so new about this? How about the introduction of DiMare’s latest venture: http://everythingcannoli.com  Yes, everythingcannoli.com.  You’re welcome.

134

Giant cannoli shell filled with cannoli from DiMare Pastry!

Another surprise for me was meeting the folks behind Brown Dog Fancy mustards. Made here in Stamford, I could’ve pulled up a chair, grabbed a beer and hung out with these guys all night. And not just because the mustards were SO amazingly good! They’re a fun duo loving what they do and know that if you offer folks both pretzel bread and mini-hot dogs for dipping, they will have you at ‘hello’.  The selection varied from spicy to mild, honey mustards and a couple made with horseradish. Seriously good stuff and can be found at http://browndogfancy.com

Three local caterers were also on hand to show their stuff: David’s Soundview Catering, OntheMarc Events and Grade A ShopRite. Lovely presentations by all and I do have to say, even though I shop there all the time, I had no idea that ShopRite did catering! This is one of the beauties of these events, I learn something new every time! With wedding and graduation season coming up, or just for your next party, please keep all of these folks in mind.

143

Beautiful Spring-like display from OnTheMarc Events.

I was honored to be asked to go and represent WOTM this year. It gave me the chance to meet many of the folks that I’ve dealt with over the years but as many know, social media is funny stuff. You can culminate many relationships with folks without any face to face interaction! Well, there is a lot of that with this business. Thankfully, there are events such as this where names and emails become faces and friendships.  Special thank you to Linda from MaxEx PR for this opportunity to go and allow me to get the word out even more about What’s on the Menu?. Truly a great night and great way to Keep it Local!!

WOTM Turns 5!

5-year-anniversary

On January 20, 2016 What’s on the Menu? hit its 5th Anniversary!  As WOTM’s creator, it is an honor to have been a part of Stamford’s ‘culture’ scene for the last five years. (it’s also quite a miracle)

Contrary to popular belief, What’s on the Menu? or WOTM (pronounced Wha-tum btw) is not a ‘foodie’ site. It actually started out as a small site I created for my friends to see what was going on around Stamford. After doing a stint working in a downtown bar in promotions, I kept in touch with a lot of the bands/djs/etc in the area. So when it was time to head out somewhere, I’d be asked, “hey, what’s on the menu for tonight?” I decided to just start writing it down and make it easier for everyone to see!

The concept grew and over the last 5 years, WOTM has changed and evolved with each year. As Stamford has grown, so have we. I say ‘we’ because I could not have kept this site going without (what is now known as) #WOTMNation !!

Putting the Quick-Hit Happenings lists can get tricky some days. It takes a lot of searching to go venue by venue to find what’s going on that night. And something that you may not know is that for the most part, the DJs and bands do much of their own promoting. So much of the time, I’m relying on our #WOTMNation of talent to let me know where they’re going to be that night!  And have to say…love every one of them! There is a whole lot of mutual support that goes on with us and can’t thank them enough for that.

Another thing you may not know about the What’s on the Menu? collective…site, FB, Twitter, Instagram, etc…is that in the 5 years of doing this, I’ve never once made a dime off of it. While not by choice, it IS the reason that I have taken happenings from a once long daily list of almost 20+ venues, (especially on weekends in the Summer), down to 5 or 6. Happenings lists used to take me up to 3 hours or more and without getting advertisers, til I had to finally say enough. And thus, Quick-Hit Happenings was born.

I will say this…if I didn’t love doing WOTM, I wouldn’t still be here! I love what the collective has become and love all of the followers that have been with us through it all. I have so many ideas for the future of What’s on the Menu? and hope that all of you will continue to be a part of what we do.

As of this writing, we now have 755 followers on Facebook and 1909 followers on Twitter! I am grateful to each and every person who has hit the ‘like’ or ‘follow’ button. I never take our followers for granted and would give you all a big group hug if it were possible to do so!

I’ve been honored with the opportunities that What’s on the Menu? has brought to me over the years. The people I’ve met, the events I’ve participated in and the recognition when someone hears WOTM’s name being mentioned. I never thought when all this started, it would become what it has become and it truly has been quite a journey so far.

This site and our posts are not just about what bar to head out to anymore. It’s about Stamford. It’s about where you and I live. It’s about supporting and KEEPING IT LOCAL! And THAT is what it’s about.

Whether you have been with us since day one or if you’ve just joined in, I can’t thank you all enough for being a part of What’s on the Menu?. I say it often and mean it with all my heart—I wouldn’t be here without YOU.

Keep it Local Stamford,

Thinking of Gift Giving? How About Giving Back?

Holiday Giving

‘Tis the season Stamford and while most of us go rushing about to get the house decorated, the cookies baked and the gifts bought, there are people, animals and even places that can always use our help. (and not just during the holidays) This year, we decided to post a few ways that we can help out this and every season with either donations or by volunteering.
This is by no means a full list of the area’s organizations and are not in any particular order. There are many that could surely use our help. But at least this is a jumping off point–a ‘starter list’ if you will–to give you some ideas on where you, your family or maybe (if you are a teacher) your class can lend a helping hand to those who need it.

While we humans, for the most part, can find help for ourselves and others, animals have to rely on their human friends when they are sick, lost or looking to find a forever home. Stamford has wonderful places all around the city that do just this. However, they can’t do it alone. Here are three such places that could use donations of money, food, blankets, newspapers, etc to help care for those who cannot care for themselves. (And PLEASE if you are thinking of adopting, don’t just adopt for a gift only to have to give the pet back a few weeks later. If you are planning to adopt–COMMIT.) Stamford Animal Control: http://www.stamfordct.gov/animal-control-center OPIN: Outreach for Pets in Need: http://opinpets.org/ Friends of Felines: http://www.adoptapet.org

Whether it’s food, money or your time, these organizations can really use your help: The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County: https://www.foodbanklfc.org/ Shelter for the Homeless: http://shelterforhomeless.org/ DOMUS Kids: http://domuskids.org/ Sexual Assault Crisis Center: http://www.thecenter-ct.org/ Salvation Army Stamford: http://ctri.salvationarmy.org/SNE/Stamford

Looking more to donate goods? While these places will also take monetary donations, clothes, furniture, books, etc. are their main goal:  Laurel House:

How about helping out places around our city? There are so many ways to use your time to help out and it’s also a great way to get outdoors: SoundWaters: http://www.soundwaters.org/ Scalzi Riverwalk: http://www.scalziriverwalk.org/  Mill River Park Collaborative: http://www.millriverpark.org/ East Side Partnership: http://eastsidepartnership.org/support/ Friends of Mianus River Park: http://friendsofmianusriverpark.org/index.htm Cove Island Wildlife Sancutary: https://www.facebook.com/Cove-Island-Wildlife-Sanctuary-156082077767515/?fref=ts

There you go. Again, this is a far cry from a complete list. But hopefully it will get you thinking of ways you can help out your community, your city and how you too can KEEP IT LOCAL STAMFORD!!

A very Happy and Healthy Holiday to all of you. 🙂

The Stranger Side of Stamford

It’s Halloween time and of course thoughts lead to ghosts, goblins and things that go bump in the night, right?? Well, Stamford has its share of legendary stories and in the spirit of the season, would like to share a few with you now.

From its origins of its original Native American name ‘Rippowam’ and the settling of the town in 1641, (the name was changed to ‘Stamford’ in 1642), to our current city whose landscape is ever-changing with the tearing down of the old to make way for the new, Stamford has quite a colorful history. So I decided to do a bit of research on some of the more unusual stories of Stamford that you may or may not be aware of. As a lover of the strange and paranormal, Stamford did not disappoint.  Not that it ever does in this realm!

So let’s get to it…

~ ~ ~

Columbus Park:  Did you know that the downtown area was once the city’s common burying ground? Columbus Park was Stamford’s main cemetery and some of the older graves were moved to Old North Field Cemetery so that Main St. could be created. Think about that the next time you are dancing to a band at Alive at Five! http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2573843 Mentioned in the book:  Insubordinate Spirit: A True Story Of Life And Loss In Earliest America 1610-1665 (great read if you want to learn more about this area!)

Witch Trials:  Salem, Massachusetts wasn’t the only place to have Witch Trials! In fact, Connecticut had witch trials going back as far as 1647. And while Salem put 19 to death for incorrectly being found guilty of practicing witchcraft, the Connecticut trials of 1662—ten were accused but only four were tried, convicted and tragically executed.  So what is the Stamford connection??  Stamford resident Elizabeth Clawson was one of two to be accused in 1692 (same year as the famous Salem Trials). She and fellow accused ‘witch’ Mercy Disborough were tried in (then spelled) Fayrefeild and tested to see if they were in fact witches. The test was brutal. You may have heard of ‘dunking’, but this is what is involved…they bound the right hand to the left foot and the left hand to the right foot and then thrown into water to see if they would float. If one floated, they were considered guilty but if they sank (and by the way, drowned) they were innocent. Either way, it was basically a death sentence. However, even after the ‘test’ and after testimony given during her trial, she was found to be “A woman of Pease (peace)”. 76 Stamford residents and elected officials signed and turned in a petition on June 4, 1692 standing by her good character and hoping to spare her life. She was in fact found NOT GUILTY and returned to Stamford where she lived until her death in 1714 at the age of 83.

For more information on this, you should read the case (which includes the scan of the original petition): http://ketchcetera.com/ARTIFACTS/Elizabeth_Clawson_Witchcraft_Trial.pdf and there is also a book on it: Escaping Salem: The Other Witch Hunt of 1692 (New Narratives in American History) or go to the website of one of Elizabeth Clawson’s decedents: http://www.questancestor.com/?p=4 (photo courtesy of this site)

Hoyt-Barnum House: Built in 1699 on land once owned by Munsee Indians, the Hoyt-Barnum house is the oldest home in Stamford. A true testament to the city’s founders, this wooden structure has held up through the roughest of New England weather for over 300 years. While the house itself is wood, the chimney was created of stone and (as per Stamford Historical Society) held together with such materials as mortar with clay, straw and animal hair. This home, built by Samuel Hoyt has a dark secret. It is said that the house and the land surrounding it is haunted by a family member of Hoyt’s that drowned in 1755.  However, that is not the only lost soul on the property. Hoyt’s first wife passed away inside the house in what was known as the birthing room—which is also where the children slept. This home saw many people living there including over 14 children who were raised in the home over the years. One infant died in the home. The Stamford Historical Society used to give tours around Halloween for years telling the tales and a few folks even caught anomalies in photographs taken at the home. One of the most known is the golden light photo which was taken in the area above what was the birthing room. Someone on one of the tours was able to capture a strange light coming from the corner of the room when there was no light around. The Historical Society will not let the photo be published but they did used to show it on tours. Unfortunately, due to the upcoming move of the house from its current location (and again, its location for over 300 years) to its future one at 1508 High Ridge Rd. next to the Historical Society, the house will be closed until its reopening in 2017. Our question is this…will the moving of the home stir up even more spirits?? Fort Stamford:  Just as Stamford is often caught in the middle of the Yankees/Red Sox war of baseball, so was it caught between the British Loyalists and the citizens of the newly formed United States of America during the Revolutionary War. Fort Stamford, which was occupied from 1781-1783 was part of this ongoing battle and was commanded by Brigadier General David How Waterbury Jr. Fort Stamford was commissioned as a Winter headquarters for troops protecting the area from British soldiers and among those housed there were local militia members and those enlisted to fight for a new independent country. If you think New England Winters are bad now, think of it for soldiers in the 18th Century. No proper warm clothing, relying on small fires for heat and food was sparse. As this was during the British Invasion of our area, the stealing of cattle, money, crops and other animals and resources happened over and over again. How any survived at all was a miracle. However, some were not so lucky. If the elements didn’t get them, hunger, illness and fatigue did. According to one account from 1782, a foot patrol of 14 Patriots were slaughtered by British troops on horseback.  The land that Fort Stamford sits on, like all land here, was once occupied by Native Americans. The Siwanoy Tribe once lived and died along the Minus River. The lands hold a tragic past and many souls rest uneasy because of this. Fort Stamford is one of these areas.  Jon Nowinski, journalist and member of the Smoking Gun Research Agency brought his team to the Fort site for a series of investigations. His team had some pretty intense encounters and not just on film. He mentions physical encounters, strange issues with their equipment, etc. And it’s no wonder. This site was not exactly the quiet, park-like place it is now! As with many hauntings reported in residential homes, activity seemed to perk up after a renovation on the grounds took place. It seems that after it was prepared for the Bicentennial celebrations, some things got a bit stirred up there. To read about Mr. Nowinski and his team’s experiences at the site, please check out this article from the Stamford Advocate published in 2014: http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/article/Fort-Stamford-haunted-by-history-and-maybe-ghosts-5859424.php Also, if you’d like to learn more about Fort Stamford and the restoration project: http://www.stamfordhistory.org/rg12.htm (photo courtesy of tripadvisor.com)

Noroton River:  You’ve heard of Nessie, Champ or the legend of Georgie? Of course we were referring to the Loch Ness Monster of Scotland, Champ the beast of Lake Champlain, NY/VT and Georgie who was a creation of the former director of the Lake George, NY Historical Society.  There are famous sea serpents all over the world that have become myth and lore throughout history and yes, there are a few of us still hoping they will be seen but not captured. Stamford had its own serpent spotted in the Noroton River in 1889 while a man was clamming. Now remember, back then, the river was much wider than it is now and from time to time, aquatic life would make its way up from the Long Island Sound—in fact, according to the article published back then, a shark had made its way up to almost the exact spot the serpent was seen a year earlier! This was no shark sighting though. To quote the Boston Globe article on the story, Mr. “Ruscoe was suddenly confronted by an enormous serpent that stuck its head out of the water right alongside the boat. It had a large black head and its back was a copper color. It ran a big red tongue out of its mouth and emitted a hissing sound.”  I don’t know about you, but that would send ME running for the hills!  And that is exactly what happened!! Mr. Ruscoe was so frightened by what he had seen, he ran for about a mile before stopping because he was too tired to run any longer. However, when he returned, both his boat and his stash of clams he had worked hard to get that day had disappeared.  He was not alone in seeing this creature though. Over a dozen people claimed to have seen this serpent on this day and because so many people talked about it, they formed an ‘expedition’ to go and hunt it down. They never found it again and believe that whatever it was, made its way back to the Sound. So next time you’re out in the water off the Stamford coast, be sure to keep your eyes open…it could still be out there!  The original article appeared in the August 18, 1889 edition of what was then known as the Boston Daily Globe under the headline: Sea Serpent Season Opens. So just when you thought you knew your city, along I come and shed some light on just a few of the many stories of Stamford. I’m a big believer in the two phrases: “Stop and Look Around” and “Learn Where You Live” and if you follow WOTM on Instagram, you know this to be true.

Take a little time here and there to read up on Stamford and find out its history. To maybe find out why your street or favorite park has that particular name or to look up and see if the part of the city you live in now always looked like that. Or take a walk! You may see your neighborhood in a whole new way. You may find a forgotten cemetery that may have one of Stamford’s founding families in it. (But please, be respectful on your visits. I can’t stress that enough.) Or you may find a house on your street that you didn’t realize is from the 1800’s. We are fortunate enough to be in that kind of a city that every corner has some historical value to it. And before it all gets torn down, moved or built over…take it in while you can.

Sure, you may come up with a ghost story or two in the process, but isn’t that part of the fun? And at Halloween time…there is NOTHING wrong with that!

Now go forth and as always, Keep it Local Stamford!!!
